Questions About This Calculator
What is the mortgage stress test rate in Canada?
The higher of 5.25% or your contract rate plus 2%. It is set by OSFI for federally regulated lenders and applies to insured mortgages.
Do I pay the stress test rate?
No. You pay your contract rate. The stress test rate is only used to check you could still afford the mortgage if rates rose.
Does the stress test apply when I renew?
Not if you renew with your current lender, and not for a straight switch to a new lender with the same balance and amortization since November 2024. Borrowing more or extending the amortization requires qualifying again.
